Plants:
Ground water freezes which is mostly the cause of plants dying in the winter.
Small plants close to the ground generally have broad, thin leaves that are good at gathering light in shady areas on the forest floor.
Trees in the forest turn colors in autumn to prepair to fall for the winter.
Trees also have thick bark to protect them from the harsh winters.
Animals
Almost 70% of spring birds in the forests are Neotropical migrants(they fly South or to Central America).
Other animals like bats, bears, mice and woodchucks stay for the winter and hibernate.
Animals in the forest that hibernate gather food for the winter before they hibernate.
Animals that don't hibernate or migrate have thick fur to keep them warm for the winter.
Climate
The deciduous forest climate has four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter.
The forest gets 14 inches of rain in the winter and 18 inches of rain in the summer.
The temperatures of the forest in the summer average at about 70 degrees F and below freezing in the winter.
Deciduous forests get the second most rainfall per year next to the rainforests.
